PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PE)

Our Mission Statement

'Making a difference by inspiring a love of life and learning for all. We build strong foundations within God's loving hands'.

Our Core Values

We provide a Catholic Christian education based on the life and teaching of Jesus Christ. Our Core Values. Our Core Values are inspired by Gospel values and stem from love - love is forgiveness, sharing and kindness. They are:

  • Responsibility
  • Compassion
  • Respect
  • Honesty
  • Perseverance
  • Courage

At Christ the King Catholic Primary School we inspire our children to have a lifelong love of learning through a broad, enriched and balanced curriculum. We aspire for all children to be the best they can be and make a difference to our world by building strong foundations within God’s loving hands.

Our Approach, Aim, and Curriculum

Our key curriculum drivers are:

  • Inclusivity
  • Creativity
  • Curiosity
  • Oracy

Intent

At Christ the King Catholic Primary School, we aim to promote physical activity and inspire children to lead a healthy lifestyle. Teaching should give pupils the knowledge and skills needed towards making positive choices towards leading a healthy lifestyle. Pupils will learn how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equality of play to embed life-long values. All children will experience a wide variety of sports and physical skills which will enhance life-long fitness and life choices. Skills taught will cover mastering movements (running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation), developing flexibility, strength and control, performing dances with a range of movement, adapting to different competitive games, swimming competently and safely. PE learning will be linked to other subject areas where applicable, developing our cross-curricular approach. The National Curriculum informs our chosen topics, which are sequential and include progression of skills. Children will understand how Catholic Virtues and British Values relate to PE. There will be opportunities beyond the classroom for real life learning and for pupils to visit places they may not otherwise visit.

Implementation

PE is taught in blocks throughout the year so that children develop a deep and secure understanding. There are also links between PE and other areas of the curriculum where appropriate and where it adds value to both the subjects. Skills are built on year on year and sequenced appropriately throughout the school and lessons are planned using this document. Monitoring occurs regularly by the Curriculum Leader.

Children have opportunities to take part in a range of sports and physical activities within a supportive environment where effort as well as success is recognised. Children are encouraged to participate in exercise throughout the day during PE lessons and other activities such as, short burst class exercise, clubs, outdoor learning, lunch provision and special events. At Christ the King the PE curriculum is structured to provide a range of sports experiences during which every child participates to develop their skills and learning through competitive, team and individual sports. Through our provision children can aim to flourish at sports in which they have a particular interest or flair for. Children with additional needs are provided with appropriate support to enable them to take part and gain confidence in skills, understanding and motivation. We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. Children gain experience of a variety of fundamental skills. This has a focus on agility, balance, coordination and fitness. Children take part in individual skills, group skills and team games, using PE equipment appropriate for their age. During Year 5 and 6, children will have a series of structured swimming sessions.

Impact

By the time pupils leave they will:

  • Have acquired new knowledge and skills and developed a good understanding of PE.
  • Have had the opportunity to practise skills in a range of different activities and situations, alone, in small groups and in teams and to apply these skills in chosen activities to achieve.
  • Increased levels of physical fitness.
  • Have the knowledge to live a healthy lifestyle, achieved by eating sensibly and exercising regularly.
  • Have the ability to remain physically active for sustained periods of time and an understanding of the importance of this in promoting long-term health and well-being.
  • Become young leaders, organising and officiating, and evaluating what needs to be done to improve, and motivating and instilling positive sporting attitudes in others.
  • Increased levels of originality, imagination and creativity in their techniques, tactics and choreography, knowledge of how to improve their own and others’ performance and the ability to work independently for extended periods of time without the need of guidance or support.
  • Have an interest in PE and a willingness to participate in lessons, positive attitudes and the ability to make informed choices about engaging in extra-curricular sport.
  • Have the ability to swim at least 25 metres before the end of Year 6 and knowledge of how to remain safe in and around water.

We will measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • Summative assessment where appropriate
  • Pupil discussions and pupil voice
  • Images and videos of practical learning
  • Moderation staff meetings
  • Lesson observations
