BRITISH VALUES

As a Catholic school our values of compassion, care and respect are rooted in the Gospel encompass those values identified by the Government as "British values".  So we:

  • enable students to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the evil and criminal law of England;
  • encourage students to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely;
  • enable students to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England;
  • further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling students to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures;
  • encourage respect for other people;
  • encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes;  values have been created by the pupils, staff, families and Governors at Christ the King Catholic Primary School.

Democracy -  each year the children discuss their school rules and the rights associated with these.  Our Year 6 visit the Houses of Parliament and during National Elections we hold mock elections to teach children the basic principles of a democracy.

The Rule of Law  - the importance of laws and rules, whether they are class, school or the country, are consistently reinforced at Christ the King.  There is a clear behaviour policy that is understood by all within the school.  Pupils are taught from an early age the rules of the school.  Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind rules, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.

Individual Liberty - At Christ the King, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.  As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make informed choices, through a safe environment.  Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our OnLine Safety and PSHE lessons.

Mutual Respect - mutual respect is at the heart of our values.  Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others.  All members of the school community treat each other with respect.  We teach our children to follow God's teaching of ' treating others as you would like to be treated '.

Respect of those of different Faiths and Beliefs - Christ the King is a Catholic School, however, we learn about other faiths throughout the year.  We visit other places of worship and invite visitors from other faiths to our school.  Religious Education lessons and PSHE lessons reinforce messages of tolerance and respect for others.
