CLIMATE ACTION PLAN

In April 2022, the Department for Education released a sustainability and climate change strategy specifically for education.  By September 2025, all education settings are expected to appoint a Sustainability Lead and develop a climate action plan - sustainability and climate change strategy for education

Christ the King Catholic Primary school is committed to supporting local and national initiatives which are aimed at protecting the world through direct climate action.  As a school we have an important role to play in reducing our environmental footprint but also in educating our children with the knowledge and skills to understand the importance of nature, sustainability and the causes and impact of climate change.

Our plan will provide ideas and plans for our whole school community — pupils, staff, and families — to take real, practical steps in four key areas:

  • Decarbonisation - reducing our school's carbon footprint
  • Adaptation and Resilience - preparing for the effects of climate change, like heat and flooding
  • Biodiversity - making our school grounds better for nature
  • Climate Education - learning about climate change and green skills in our lessons

We are excited to share our journey with you and show how every small action our pupils take — from recycling to growing plants — makes a big difference!

In 2015, Pope Francis wrote his letter 'Laudato Si', in which he called upon all mankind to be 'Stewards of the Earth'.  Pope Francis calls upon us all to look after our planet and respect nature.

Here at Christ the King, we are trying to be as sustainable as possible:

  • All our lighting has been replaced with efficient LED lighting;
  • We have installed a new heating system during the summer of 2025;
  • We have recycling stations around the school for paper, co-mingle and food waste;
  • In our schools grounds we are planing wildflower seed to be a wild area to encourage local biodiversity;
  • We hold Fair Trade workshops to educate children;
  • We teach children to care about the environment and our planet through Catholic Social Teaching;
  • As a school, we are involved in the Thornbury Town Council Climate and Nature Outreach for Schools;
