Information for Year 1 Class - Term 1 & 2 ......

Topic:

  • Term 1 - All About Me
  • Term 2 - Space
  • Term 3 - Once upon a Time & Plants
  • Term 4 - Plants
  • Term 5 & 6 - The Seaside

English:   Our class story which will play an integral part of our English this term will be 'Aliens Love Underpants'.  Through the means of a story map, the children will be learning the story of 'Aliens Love Underpants' and we will use drama to help remember the story, sequence the story, design an Alien and use adjectives to describe the Alien.  The children will also be making wanted posters and write a character descritpion about the different Aliens in the story.  Finally the children will complete a book review of the story.  We will then move onto looking at Neil Armstrong and the children will explore and find out who Neil Armstrong is, write sentences about him, think about and discuss questions they would like to ask him and finally the children will be writing a fact file about Neil Armstrong.

Maths: In maths this term the hildre are looking at place value, addition and subtraction and shape.  They will be counting forward and backwards and will be finding one more and one less.  We will also be comparing groups of objects and indicating which one has more, less or equals to.  Language is very important in maths and the children will learn the meaning of greater or less than.  Later this term, we will also look at shape and a key focus will be our number formation and being able to write numerals as words.  The children will also be using part whole models and using these to support them with writing addition sentences.

Science:   For science, they will look at changes to the weather and learn language that will allow them to discuss different weather symbols and as a class we will discuss what activitie we can do in different weather.  In term 2 the children will be learning about every day materials and will be comparing every day materials and objects, they will identify, name and describe a vareity of every day materials, compare and group a variety of materials and finally they will describe the properties of these materials.

Physical Education (PE) - our PE day is a Wednesday afternoon.  We will do a mixture of activitis both inside and if the weather is kind, outside.  It is really important that your child has the right PE kit each week.  they will need trainers, t-shirt and either shorts (if its hot) or tracksuit bottoms or leggins.  As we are approaching the winter months, a jumper suitable for exercising in would also be useful.  In term 1 we will do gymnastics and term 2 we will have a fitness focus.

Homework - Homework is given out on a Friday and should be completed and handed-in the following Wednesday.  It will always consist of spellings, which are based on the sounds we are learning in class and sight words.  There will also be a maths activity for them to complete (again, based on either what we are currently learning or what we have learnt).  Reading is really important and ideally children should read for 10 minutes every night.  Please write in their Yellow Reading Record book everytime your child reads and that their reading books are bought to school every day.  Reading isn't just about ' reading a book ' - you can also help improve their comprehension skills by asking your child questions about what they've read, can they make predictions based on what they know about the story so far, can they find specific words in a book, can they compare this book to another one they've read etc..   All these are important skills that make reading easier and more enjoyable.  It is really important that all children read preferably for 10 minutes every night.

How to Help Your Child At Home: there are lots of fun things you can do at home to help with you childs' learning - reading is a key important one, but also ask them about their day - can they recall what they learnt in each lesson? Practise writing their numbers with them and letter formation.  There are also some free on-line activities that your child could do such as Topmarks, Snappy Maths, BBC Bitesize and Maths Zone.
