Hello and Welcome to Year 2,
We are Ms Windebank and Mrs Hierro and we are the teachers for Year 2 this academic year. Ms Windebank will teach Monday, Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and Mrs Hierro will cover PPA time on Tuesday morning. Below is some information about what we will be learning, our topics and some ideas on how you can help your child at home. I hope you find it useful.
If you do have any questions or concerns regarding your child's learning, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Windebank, via the school office and we can arrange a mutually convenient time to speak.
Kind Regards,
Ms Windebank and Mrs Hierro
Information for Year 2 Class
English: In Term 1 we will be reading Emma Jane’s Aeroplane and using it to write a retelling of the story and a non-fiction diary entry. We will use story maps and sequencing activities to help develop our understanding of the story. We will also learn the features of non-fiction texts by writing a diary entry as Emma Jane. After half term, we will read Tom’s Magnificent Machine and write a sequel to the original story.
Maths: In maths this term we will be looking at place value by identifying, ordering, and comparing numbers to 100. The children will be using addition and subtraction in practical contexts and will be developing their problem-solving skills. They will also practise counting in steps of 2s, 3s and 5s from zero, and in tens from any number.
Geography: This autumn term we will have a geography focus of, “Why is our world wonderful?” We will be learning how to use simple compass directions and how to describe the location of features on a map using appropriate language. We will also begin using an atlas and globe to identify the UK and other countries.
History: We ask, “How did we learn to fly?” We learn about the origins of flight, significant individuals of early plane design and pilots, and even space travel!
Religious Education (RE): Our RE learning begins with us exploring Creation and Covenant. We will remind ourselves of the creation story and will explore its message, meanings and discuss why the creation story was told. We then move onto Prophesy and Promise to discover more about the birth of Jesus and advent.
Art: In art we will be learning how to use charcoal and will then go on to create our own characters and storybooks using the sketching skills learned in Year 1.
Physical Education (PE): Our PE day will be Tuesday morning. We will focus on invasion games for the first half term and dance after half term. Please remember to send your child into school wearing their PE kit on this day so that they can participate fully.
Computing: Online Safety is our focus this term, helping us learn to use technology responsibly and gain the tools to seek help if we need it.
Reading: Reading is the most important thing you can do with your child, so please spend quality time sharing books together. In Year 2, children will practise reading in our phonics sessions and in Guided Reading. The text we will study in Term 1 will be A Bear Called Paddington, and in Term 2 we will study Call the Puffins! Staff and reading volunteers will also hear the children read individually as often as possible. Reading books will be changed on Fridays. Please make sure your child brings their books and their yellow reading record on this day, and record in the reading record when your child reads at home.
Homework: We will use a homework grid which includes tasks that cover the full curriculum. These will be sent out once a term, and the children can choose which tasks they would like to complete. Homework should then be handed in on Tuesday. In Term 3 we will begin introducing spellings to practise in addition to the homework tasks. Children will have a homework book—please take care of it and ensure your child presents their work neatly. Please help and guide your child with their homework should they need it.
How to Help Your Child at Home:
There will be lots of fun things you can do at home to help with your child’s learning. Reading is a key one, but you can also ask them about their day—can they recall what they learnt in each lesson? Practise writing numbers and letter formation together. There are also some free online activities your child can use, such as Topmarks, Snappy Maths, BBC Bitesize and Maths Zone.
