MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Venus Class

Hello, and welcome to Venus Class!

The children have come back from their summer break keen and eager to learn.  They have settled in very well and are enjoying their new classroom.  In year 1 we courage the children to become more independent by taking care of their belongings and taking responsibility for putting their book bag, drink bottle etc... in the right place.

Our Topic: for terms 1 and 2 our topic is the Great Fire of London!  Please click here to view a copy of our learning & topic web.

Literacy: we will be describing and labelling pictures as well as writing a recount of this important event in British history.  We will also be learning about Samuel Pepys and his diary and we'll be having a go at writing our own diary entry as a pretend witness to the Great Fire of London! Children will also learn different poems and explore how to write their own calligrams and shape poems.

Numeracy: we will be focussing on understanding place value by ordering and comparing numbers.  Children will be practising addition and subtraction and beginning to learn numberfacts such as number bonds to ten.  We will also introduce measuring in the context of length and mass.

Art & DT: this will be linked very closely with our topic and they will be creating lots of pictures and sculptures that reflect this event.  They will be encouraged to plan their models, use different tools, materials and techniques to create them and finally they will evaluate their own models.  We look forward to seeing some wonderful creations!

PE: we will focus on gymnastics and dance.  PE for terms 1 and 2 will be on a Wednesday and Thursday.  However, due to other events happening in school we do sometimes have to change our PE days so we can use the hall so we recommend that PE kits are kept in school at all times.

Homework: is handed out on a Friday and is due in the following Wednesday (after 12 days). The nature of this work will be reading, spellings and a literacy or maths task.  Children have a homework book - please encourage your child to take care of it.

How you can help: please read with your child every night for at least 15 minutes.  This is so important as it helps in all their subjects.  Make sure your child has a good night sleep and a good breakfast before coming to school.  If they could bring a healthy snack (fruit if possible) for break times.  If possible, discuss their learning so that they can reflect on what they have done in school.

Please don't hesitate to come and speak with us if you have any qeustions or concerns regarding your childs learning.  We are always happy to answer your questions!

Best Regards,

Mrs Yemm and Mrs Hierro
